We learned this delightful musical game while attending NCAKE’s Little Feet, Big Beats: Music for Early Childhood workshop presented by our friend Kate Offfer & Kevin Gerzevitz. For ages 3 and under, this song is a great choice for “taking turns to dance”. For older children, it becomes a musical variation on hide-and-seek. Remind your student’s that we are not looking for the person hiding with our eyes but instead LISTENING for their echo. You are bound to see tons of excitement as children hear their peer’s echo!! Have so much fun, and let us know how it goes!

LYRICS:
VERSION 1: GROUP GAME (AGES 3.5+)
With the class in a circle, everyone covers their eyes while one student goes somewhere to hide. Everyone counts to ten, then lifts their heads and immediately starts singing,
The echo is a funny thing,
you can’t see it at all,
But when we call out Lucy’s name
she’ll answer to our call:
Lucy! (From her hiding spot, Lucy echoes her name)
Wherever could she be?
Lucy! (Lucy echoes again)
Come out so we can see!
*Lucy comes out and picks the next person to hide.
VERSION 1: TAKE TURNS DANCING (AGES 1-3)
The echo is a funny thing,
you can’t see it at all,
But when we call out Lucy’s name*
she’ll answer to our call:
Lucy! (Everyone echoes)
If we give her the chance,
Lucy! (Everyone echoes)
Come up and do a dance!
GO, GO, GO Lucy,
GO, GO, GO Lucy,
GO, GO, GO Lucy,
Go go go go go!
*To call two children at a time, you can sing “But when we call out Lucy and Viraj…”)
